Dog Care Tips

Here are 10 dog care tips which I trust will provide a bit of valuable information and guidelines for a healthy dog.

For a healthy dog in the summer, cars can present a real hazard. Summer heat can send the temperature soaring in cars. Never leave your dog in a car in warmer weather. A parked car on an 80 degree day can heat up to 120 degrees in less than 10 minutes.

Access to cool water all the time is mandatory for your dog in hot weather. You may want to consider getting a watering system that hooks to your outdoor faucet to provide a continuous flow of fresh cool water.

Take precautions when exercising your dog in hot weather. When temperature reach 85 degrees and the humidly is high you may want to exercise your pet in the early AM before the temperature rises. Know the signs of heat exhaustion.

Good quality food is a major step you can take to have a healthy dog. A quick way to assess the quality of dog food is read the list of ingredients which are listed in descending order and quantity. The first four or five ingredients will provide a very good indication of the quality of the food.

There are many factors to consider when choosing a breed of dog. One of the major considerations needs to be the amount of time (exercise) and care will a particular breed requires and will you have that time to give. High energy dogs will need on a daily basis a safe positive outlet for their zest for life.

It’s very helpful to be consistent in your training of your dog. Use the same words and body language each time you give your dog a command. Once your dog has learned the command you can just use the signal to get the correct response.

Dogs are pack animals and will naturally work out among themselves who is top dog and the order of dominance. This helps the survival of the pack and creates order and harmony. You must be the Alpha leader.

To grow up to be a healthy dog, puppies should receive their first set of shots starting at 6 weeks of age, then again at 9, 12 and 15 weeks. The series of shots is important to provide your puppy maximum disease prevention.

Puppies should be fed a high quality puppy food three times a day until they are 12 weeks old and the twice per day until they are a year old and then can be feed 1 or 2 times daily.
